Veolia Environnement is now advancing at full speed to catch up with the Spaniards on W Hôtels just 50 miles ahead. The red IMOCA is now sailing in a solid 20-25 knot trade wind. This bodes well for closing the gap with Alex Pella and Pepe Ribes who have been traveling further south and profiting from a more favorable weather system since the Azores.
Still some suspense
Last night, things changed a little and more robust conditions enabled Roland and Jean-Luc to still hold their own. Veolia Environnement is now on a long tack through to the finish and a final gibe could provide the opportunity for a minor adjustment to the leaderboard.
Arrival on Friday ?
Especially since their arrival should be less laborious than for Mike Golding and Foncia. Even if the competitors still racing are likely to be slowed as they approach Puerto Limon, the low currently over the area should have moved off clearing the way for a brisker finish. It is still difficult to predict the exact arrival time, but we should see Veolia Environnement’s red sail appear in the night of Thursday to Friday
